SureFire E1L-A Outdoorsman - Review, Runtime, and beamshots
The SureFire E1L-A Outdoorsman is the latest variant of the SureFire E1L series of flashlights. Designed to provide extended runtime, the dual-output E1L-A is powered by one 123A lithium battery and is rated to provide 5 lumens for 41 hours in low mode and 90 lumens for 6 hours in high mode. As with previous versions of the E1L, the new Outdoorsman utilizes a Total Internal Reflection (TIR) lens to focus output and is controlled by a pushbutton tailcap.
The E1L-A always comes on in low mode first, with high mode selected by an additional press or click of the tailcap button. The E1L-A features aerospace aluminum construction and uses the same body and tailcap design as previous versions. The most notable differences with the new version is the addition of SureFire's 2-way pocket clip and the completely redesigned KE1 head. The E1L-A can be disassembled into its major component parts which are completely interchangeable with other SureFire E-series lights. The 2-way clip allows the light to be carried in either bezel up or bezel down positions and can be used to attach the E1L-A to the brim of a cap. With its small size, the E1L-A is extremely comfortable to carry when clipped in a pants pocket. SureFire E1L-A Performance The E1L-A produces a fairly tight beam with a prominent center hotspot which can easily reach distances approaching 50 meters. This hotspot is surrounded by an extremely wide spill beam which is effective for 10 to 15 meters. The beam has a slightly warm and greenish tint which is most noticeable when illuminating a white surface or comparing the light to a cool white LED. In actual usage the greenish tint is not nearly as noticeable, especially when used outdoors. Additional beamshots and side-by-side comparisons with several other lights can be found in the full review at FlashlightlightGuide.com Runtime The E1L-A lives up to the Outdoorsman reputation of providing light for an extended length of time. The long runtime is achieved, in part, by reducing output to 75% after 2 minutes of continuous operation. The E1L-A maintains this level of output for another 5.5 hours before declining down to 10% at the 6 hour mark. Over the course of the test the E1L-A never felt warm to the touch. The E1L-A can also be used with SureFire's new F04-A, F05-A, and F06-A diffuser and filters. Additional photos and beamshots can be seen in the Mini-Review of the SureFire Diffusers and Filters. Conclusions The E1L-A Outdoorsman is well suited for use a a general purpose outdoor utility light with its compact size, long runtime, and respectable output. It compares well with earlier models and it is apparent that the design was focused more on increased runtime than sheer output. Strengths
