По умолчанию [Review] RAYUS U10 (XM-L2 U2 / 1x 18650, 2x (R)CR123a) Rechargeable

RAYUS U10
LED: CREE XM-L2 U2 CW
Battery: 1× 18650, 2x ® CR123A
Modes: 7 (Moonlight-Low-Medium-High-Turbo-Strobe-SOS) Programmable
Switch: Digital, head
Date: February 2015

INTRODUCTION:
Another proposal from the young firm Rayus is the U10, a compact rechargeable flashlight with programmable user interface, which pursues the customization of the product by the user to meet the needs and tastes of a large segment of users. This flashlight is the second Rayus I’ll check, since some weeks ago saw the A10WRB, one of the first multi-colored lights with dedicated reflectors.
The Rayus U10 comes in a simple but effective white carton box, only identified on the outside by a sticker with the information on the flashlight.

As you can notice, in my unit box is selected for the XM-L2 U2, as there is an alternative neutral tint using a XM-L2 T6.

Inside the box, along flashlight and comprehensive user manual, we have a textile holster with Velcro closure, a wrist strap, a set of spare O-rings, USB-> MicroUSB cable plus wall socket USB adapter type EUR for charging the battery.

EXTERIOR FINISH:

The appearance of the flashlight is simple, straightforward and quite far from the “tactical” aspect. Fully machined aluminum anodized in matte black, body only has a simple logo engraved on it.

With a length of only 137mm, 30mm head diameter and 25mm on the body, it is quite compact and comfortable to carry.
The head of the flashlight, slightly oversized, has a discrete battlements in aluminum bezel, which would allow us to see if we left the flashlight on while headstanding.

The lens is glass with AR treatment, and the reflector is smooth and relatively deep. The XM-L2 emitter is correctly centered in the smooth reflector.

On the neck of the head we found a very interesting detail: The MicroUSB charging port is hidden behind a rotating ring, similar to that found for example in Sunwayman M11R for switching and mode selection.

Inside head we find the driver, which has a spring for positive battery contact, making flashlight compatible both with button and flat top 18650’s.

Just below the charging port have the sole power switch of this flashlight, electronic switch hidden under semi-transparent silicone button. This switch is equipped with light inside, serving as a warning/indicator to several questions, which we shall see in detail later.

The threads, as in the A10, are machined with excellent trapezoidal cut, and are also anodized, allowing locking in all joints. They came properly lubricated.
The flashlight tailcap does not contain any type of switch, and just holds the spring to the negative battery contact. The base is completely flat so the flashlight can be used in “candle” mode perfectly. In the lower lip we find a hole for wrist strap.

USER INTERFACE:

The user interface of this flashlight is really complex, with several groups of modes available, selectable memory function, lit in a fixed default mode, etc …
Although I will make a short summary of their duties, I recommend you to take a look at the user manual for the U10 Rayus to see all the possibilities this rechargeable flashlight offers.

On and off: The on and off is done via the single switch located on the head. To turn on, hold down the button for 0.5 seconds, and repeat the operation to turn it off.

Changing Modes:
With the flashlight on, a simple press of the button will toggle between modes in ascending order.

Strobe modes:
Special modes are hidden, and to access them (either with the flashlight on or off) must keep the button pressed for 1 second to enter the variable frequency strobe mode, and 2 seconds for the SOS mode.

Block-out:
In addition to blocking the flashlight by partial unscrewing any of its threads, Rayus offer the option of an electronic lock using the main switch: With the flashlight off, press quickly five times, at which point the flashlight emit a flash indicating that it is locked. To unlock we have to quickly press three times.

Reading the charge status of the battery: To know the state of charge of the battery easily, simply by making a quick double click on the button head on any low mode. The flashlight emits a series of flashes, 3 for a charge state of 75% or higher, two for 50% and one for 25%. Moreover, within 5 seconds after turning on the light the switch will light up showing different colors for the different states of battery charge: Green when the state exceeds 70%, orange for a state between 70% and 30%, solid red for 30% or less, and flashing red to indicate that the battery is ready to be changed or charged.

Memory: The flashlight has memory mode. If we turn off the flashlight, the next activation will be in that mode. The strobe modes lack memory.

Temperature protection:
The flashlight has a temperature sensor located in the driver controlling the temperature and reducing light output not to exceed a certain point. Once the flashlight reduces its temperature, the output increases again to its starting point.

Charging function: Through the microUSB port on the switch, we can charge the battery (only for 18650) of our flashlight without removing it, by connecting the supplied (or any other USB->MicroUSB) cable to any USB port or wall adapter. Thanks to have used a standard microUSB port for charge can use our Smartphone adaptor, so the chances are multiplied by not having to always rely on a proprietary connector.

Data provided by Rayus engineering team.

While charging the battery switch button will display red, turning green when charging is complete. If there is a problem with charge process (no battery, improperly installed or faulty) the indicator will blink orange. As if this were not enough, the flashlight can be used while charging, but for safety reasons only Med and Low modes will be available.

Mode groups: In addition, this U10 has four groups of independent modes with different characteristics:

(All measurements are taken following the ANSI NEMA FL1 procedure)

The usual modes test on 100% Fenix flashlights calibrated integrating sphere yields data in line with those specified by the manufacturer, something certainly encouraging, especially considering some of the recent results of this same test with lights of other “reputable” brands. We see most modes are right with tiny differences, except for the Turbo mode with 90LM (10%) below specified stays.

PERFORMANCE:
The performance of this Rayus U10, when we capture the figures obtained in the field over the entire runtime to draw the graph shows a curve unregulated, probably a result of temperature control that has kept the maximum performance through continuous cooling extra provided by a small fan that I use when logging data to prevent overheating the lights are when subjected to this peculiar torture.

Compared with other similar flashlights, the lack of a stepdown is well noted in the runtime, but otherwise maintains the highest LM / minute ratio, with a more than acceptable performance for this Turbo mode.

BEAM PROFILE:
We face the classic beam profile of a XM-L2 with smooth but not too big nor deep reflector, although it is true that compared the Fenix UC40, its nearest rival, has a small advantage thanks to its wider and deeper reflector.

The CW tint of this unit is quite good, with the typical yellow halo in the surrounding of the hotspot, but nothing worrisome.

PERSONAL CONCLUSION:
To be one of the first lights of this firm, the Rayus U10 has left me impressed by the smooth finish, both mechanical in its construction and completeness of its user interface.
The integrated charging system is also well settled, especially when using the microUSB port, today’s standard for many devices, so it does not require us to carry a proprietary cable / adapter if we recharge our battery wherever we go.

While programmable user interface is complex, is designed to offer a wide range of options to the user, so according to our tastes or needs, employ few minutes to read the manual and program our favorite group, and certainly not return to do so because virtually all modes offer an almost total control over all functions, varying only details like memory mode, set to on or the inclusion of moonlight mode in the sequence.
Negatives: If I am to seek some negatives, hits me enough that neither Fenix in his UC40 or Rayus in this U10 include a clip for this flashlight. The programming procedure is complex and requires some learning.
Positives: I especially like the way that the charge port is protected from damage, because I think a much more elegant and elaborate than the typical silicone cover solution. Also this solution is hardly noticeable in size on the light, which it occurs in the MH range of Nitecore. The wide range of modes and groups as well as the sophisticated charging function make this flashlight a genuine all-rounder, since hardly miss another function other than the momentary power by a mechanical switch.

Rayus U10 supplied by manufacturer for review. Thanks!
