Charger and Battery Mini-Review

Along with the review sample of the Big Bruiser, Wayne included a sample of the 26650 sized lithium ion battery he plans to make available, and also the charger he is selling that can hold a 26650. The charger is the Trustfire TR-005 single bay charger, and the battery is labeled "INR26650E 4000mAh 3.7V". The battery looks the same as the King Kong battery, but I don't know for sure.

The charge is single bay, and fits any length from 16340 up to 26650. The instructions say not to charge batteries with smaller capacity than a 16340 (for example, a 10440) because the charge current is too high.

The sides are cut out for easy battery removal, and a single light will turn red or green to indicate charging status.

The positive terminal is fixed and protrudes, so it can make contact with flat-top cells. The negative contact is fixed to a spring, so it will extend to fit whatever size battery, and hold it in place.

The charger has a switch to decided if you'd like to take the battery up to 3.0 V or 4.2V. The 26650 for the Bruiser is meant to be charged to a max of 4.2 V.

The battery has a very small bit of info printed on the side, and you can see the protection circuit on the positive terminal.

As you can see, the positive terminal is not quite a "flat top", but it's close. The terminal just barely raises above the wrapping surrounding it, making this a button top battery.

-------

The battery claims a capacity of 4000mAh, but I measure it to have a capacity of 4739mAh, when discharged over a constant 1.8Ω load from 4.2 V until the protection kicked in. This resistance allowed a max discharge rate of 2.335A, which is significantly less than the Big Bruiser pulls, so you can expect an effective capacity smaller than 4739mAh when using this battery in the Big Bruiser. Below is a graph of the discharge of the battery over the 1.8Ω load, showing the current in orange and remaining capacity in purple.

-------

The TR-005 charges this 26650 battery in about 12-14 hours, depending on how far you let it go. The light on the charger is red while charging, then turns green when the battery is charged. However, it maintains a trickle charge even after the light is green. I found the light usually turns green around the time the battery reaches 4.17 or 4.16 V. It will remain green as it continues to charge the battery very slowly; the furthest I ever let it take the battery was 4.22V (about 6 hours from when the light first turned green). I'm not sure if it would continue to apply the trickle charge, and how high the battery would go if you let it. It doesn't charge fast at all, but still, plan to take the battery off the charger when it's done.

Below are graphs of the TR-005 charging the INR 26650E, first the voltage while charging, then the current.
