SureFire E2LAA-A Outdoorsman - Review, Runtime, and Beamshots
The SureFire E2LAA-A Outdoorsman is the latest version of SureFire's only AA battery powered handheld flashlight. Able to operate with alkaline primary, lithium primary, or NiMH rechargeable batteries, the E2LAA-A is rated to provide 5 lumens for 100 hours in low mode and 115 lumens for 8.5 hours in high mode. As with other members of the Outdoorsman family of lights, the E2LAA-A utilizes a Total Internal Reflection (TIR) lens to provide a relatively tight beam for additional reach while still providing a wide spill.
The E2LAA-A is controlled by a pushbutton tailcap switch and always comes on in low mode first, with high mode selected by an additional press or click of the tailcap button. The E2LAA-A features aerospace aluminum construction and uses the same body and tailcap design as previous versions. The only visual difference with the new version is the completely redesigned KE1B head. The E2LAA-A can be disassembled into its major component parts which are completely interchangeable with other SureFire E-series lights. SureFire E2L-A Performance The E2LAA-A produces a beam with a fairly tight center hotspot which can easily reach beyond 60 meters. This hotspot is surrounded by an extremely wide spill beam which allows peripheral vision out to around 20 meters. The beam has a slightly cool tint with a hint of greenish hue which is most noticeable when illuminating a white surface or comparing the light to a cool white LED. In actual usage the greenish tint is not nearly as noticeable, especially when used outdoors. Additional beamshots and side-by-side comparisons with several other lights can be found in the full SureFire E2LAA-A Outdoorsman review at FlashlightlightGuide.com. Runtime The E2LAA-A utilizes a similar regulation strategy as the E1L-A with a programmed step-down to approximatley 75-80% output after 2 minutes of continuous operation. The E2LAA-A can also be used with SureFire's new F04-A, F05-A, and F06-A diffuser and filters. Additional photos and beamshots can be seen in the Mini-Review of the SureFire Diffusers and Filters. Conclusions The E2LAA-A Outdoorsman is not going to impress people based upon its sheer output nor is it meant to do so. It does what it is designed to do very well which is produce a steady and consistent amount of light for an extended length of time. The ability to use a variety of primary and rechargeable batteries makes the E2LAA-A even more versatile, allowing owners to use what is available rather than relying upon one type of battery.
